LG 55-inch OLED TV “likely” available in Q4 (official)

LG-D-55ich-OLED_2

On Christmas day, LG Display had announced that it had successfully developed a 55″ OLED HDTV. That LG 55″ OLED TV will be demonstrated at the upcoming CES 2012 which starts in a bit more than a week from now. However, Tim Alessi from LG USA’s Home Electronic division has revealed that this would “likely” become a real product, in Q4 2012. This echos what LG Display CEO Kwon Young-soo said last July.

If that was true, LG would be the first company that puts a product of that kind on the market. Even if the supplies are limited and the price is somewhat expensive, this is no easy task, even for display experts like LG. Making OLED displays that can consistently reproduce the same color is very hard. Even OLED smartphone displays have to be extensively tweaked so that most handsets have similar colors out of the box. (more…)

Verizon new fee abandoned

Verizon logoYesterday there was news about Verizon planning to charge its customers a $2 convenience fee if they didn’t pay their bills over the counter or through auto-billing. Today it looks like those charges won’t ever come into play. According to reports online – Verizon has announced that it will not be charging its customers the $2 fee. This comes after the countless complaints from its customers that can be seen on blogs and in the comments section all over the internet, and also after the FCC mentioned that it would be looking into the situation.

What’s interesting is that the fee wasn’t even officially announced yet – it was discovered via a leaked document, so it makes me wonder about what would happen if the document wasn’t leaked and the convenience fees came into play without giving people a chance to complain about it beforehand – would things turn out differently?

Thermosensitive pillows gives the game away

There is nothing quite like the frustrating feeling of sinking your rear end down on an invitingly soft sofa, only to realize that someone had just got up from that spot, leaving an uncomfortable and warm ‘experience’ envelop you instead. Well, perhaps the introduction of thermosensitive pillows might see the end to such frustrations, changing color from black to green/blue, red to violet and burgundy to purple. Of course, those who are suspicious of their other half in a relationship might just make a spot check at home, and seeing two different pairs of hands or legs on the pillows even though there is supposed to be only one person at that point in time might just be the smoking gun you have been looking for. Make sure your name is Jack, as you end up nimble and quick, considering that within a minute, the change in color due to body heat will wear off. Definitely not the cheapest pillows at all, where $150 will net you a snakeskin/lambskin pillow.

Porsche 996 TV Entertainment Center

One thing that both men and women can agree on – they tend to disagree on many things. When it comes to home design, the same principle applies, so some sort of understanding must be arrived at if the home were to exist in harmony. Most of the working class guys out there would definitely welcome a Porsche in their homes, but how about the idea of just the rear end of a Porsche 996 that holds a 42″ flat panel TV in the process? The lady of the house will most probably not find this too amusing, as a TV rack or shelf might be far more practical. (more…)

Stephen Hawking wants you!

One of the most brilliant minds on this planet belongs to Stephen Hawking, and he needs a geek who has the heart and interest in maintaining his special wheelchair. This particular gadget whiz will be paid a modest £25,000 so that Mr. Hawking’s custom-made ride will keep on rollin’. I can almost see a meme appearing already, with the tag line “They see me thinkin’, they hatin’.” What makes this wheelchair all the more special is its ability to convey what Mr. Hawking wants to say through a robotic voice box. Apple Mirrorbook Air is so fake, you’d wish it was real

I know that April Fool’s Day is not here yet, but that does not mean you cannot have a good laugh before we bid 2011 goodbye. Remember the Mirrorbook Air that we covered earlier this month? It seems that this particular video espouses the wonders of this tiny marvel – where it is said to sport an optical “super mini drive”, accompanied by a 1.5″ reflective Retina Display which doubles up as a mirror when it is not powered, alongside “nano solid state technology”. No idea what you are going to do with just 5 minutes of battery life, and something tells me all of this is nothing but the result of an overactive imagination and perhaps, having smoked a joint or two. Nice effect on the Apple Mirrorbook Air’s display lighting up at the end of the video though. (more…)

PS Vita unboxed

Are you one of those who managed to get hold of the PlayStation Vita? It has not exactly flew off the shelves in terms of sales figures in the Land of the Rising Sun, so hopefully the rather slow start is not an omen of things to come. After all, the Sony PS3 did take its fair share of time to rise up the sales charts slowly but surely, as they were initially covered by an avalanche of Nintendo Wii sales. Well, for folks who reside in Europe and in the US, the Vita is said to arrive only on February 22nd next year. Good thing for grey imports, as well as having friends who live in another part of the world. What you see below is a video of the PS Vita being unboxed, and just in case you are not too sure whether it was a case of too much beer or your ears are giving up on you, the video’s actually in German. Facebook MessengerYesterday the Windows Facebook for Messenger app was leaked, and it looks like Facebook has decided to capitalize on its premature release. Instead of going after the people who leaked the link or taking the files offline, Facebook has now officially released the app to the public. In case you weren’t aware, the Facebook Messenger app allows Facebook users to chat with their friends without having to launch Facebook in a web browser.
